Are we heading towards another lockdown?
Will the “rule of six” be abandoned?
It was only a week ago when the UK government introduced the “rule of six”. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is already considering to replace this rule with stricter rules to tackle the virus as daily infections sky-rocketed to a four-month high of 4,422 on September 19. The government has been contemplating to implement a two-week circuit breaker.
Chief scientific advisor’s stark warning to the UK population
Scientists have been divided on whether a temporary circuit breaker measure would be sufficient to tackle the rising cases. The Independent has reported that the government’s chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, has told a televised Downing Street briefing that cases are “doubling roughly every seven days” and that there was “no doubt” that cases were increasing in all age-groups. He further exclaims, “If that continues unabated and this grows doubling every seven days then what you see…is by mid-October we would end up with something like 50,000 cases per day.”
Can the already-crippled retail sector survive another lockdown?
The retail sector has been suffering long before the coronavirus pandemic hit the world economy. Many saw the first lockdown as the final nail in the coffin. On the other hand, there were others who were fortunate enough to survive the first lockdown through the lifeline given by government grants and loans. It has been a tough road for most post-lockdown. There is great uncertainty whether such high street businesses would be resilient enough to survive another lockdown.
Will the government freeze the property market again?
In the first lockdown, the government-imposed restrictions on property transactions and viewings, effectively freezing the entire UK property market. The government has yet to suggest whether this will happen again should another lockdown be implemented.
What should I do if I own a commercial property?
It is tough owning commercial properties, especially in the year 2020. Commercial tenants are going through bankruptcies and initiating break clauses. This is leaving commercial landlords out of pocket, especially with business rates and insurance premiums racking up. Some may suggest selling such properties in such times of uncertainty.
